The Bourbon Sugarcane was a very popular strain of the sugar crop and was especially produced in the Americas. Though a majority of the time sugar was gathered and stocked in factories that didn't have the technology to refine it. So in order to refine the sugar, the workers had to transport it by water on make shift boats to a more sophisticated factory. During the transportation process, the sugarcane would come in contact with rather unclean water and become infected before it reached its final destination. This lead not only to infection and spread of disease to the consumers but it also lead to a fall in the production level of refined sugar. If the sugar became infected before reaching the refining process, then they couldn't refine it because of the risk of disease. In this chain of events, to keep a steady production pace, more technologically advanced factories were incorporated among the cultivating communities to avoid the spread of disease. With this addition, land was taken up and important cultivation sites were destroyed in the process.
Among other environmental impacts with the production of sugar, fuel was a major problem. It became pointless to try and transport sugar if it was just going to become contaminated in the process, and finalization of the sugar production was very difficult to complete at the original factory itself. Fuel was needed to refine the sugar and make it a consumable commodity, but it was a challenge to get enough fuel to each small production factory within lower class communities to provide a safer process of production.
