Origins
Sugar is one of the major sweeteners in our generation. People around the world use sugar on a day to day basis. However, not many people know what sugar is and when, where and how it originated. Sugar is a carbohydrate that provides energy for humans and animals. The common spice is found in many vegetables and fruit. Sucrose derived from the island nation, Papua New Guinea approximately around 510 B.C. Although sugar was found in New Guinea, India is known as the home of sugar. Sugar was first created by pressing out the juice and boiling it into crystals. Sugar originated through a large grass plant called Gramineae and is found in all green plants. Sucrose was originally used for chewing, however as humans know today, sugar has a lot more to offer and contribute in this day and age. The picture on the left shows the grass family (Gramineae) in which sugar came from.
